The optimal solution for handling transformers weighing up to 500 tonnes

Two Solving state-of-the-art Air Film Movers are used for testing transformers at Tamini Trasformatori S.r.l. in Italy. The Air Film Movers provide easy, efficient, and safe handling of transformers weighing between 250 and 500 tonnes.

Tamini Trasformatori S.r.l. is the leading Italian company in the world for the design and production of industrial, power, and special transformers. More than 9,000 Tamini transformers have been manufactured and installed for customers in more than 90 countries around the world. 

The transformer manufacturer previously used cranes and rails to handle transformers but switched to air film technology for easier, faster, and more flexible handling.

Air film technology was a cost-efficient option for Tamini since it does not require any cranes or fixed installations in the floor. Instead, Tamini opted for a renewed floor and simultaneously received a nice and clean production environment. Floating on an air film the Movers cause no friction and thus no floor wear.

Used as single units or in pairs

The two remote-controlled Air Film Movers are used for moving transformers from the production line to a test area and then to dispatch. The transformers are always placed on pallets on which they remain throughout the testing. Each Mover handles transformers of up to 250 tonnes. Two Movers can be connected and used in pairs for handling up to 500-tonne transformers, while supervised by one single operator. The Mover is supplied with compressed air via a built-in hose reel equipped with sensors preventing the Mover from moving forward when the hose is fully extended.

A radio-remote control enables the operator to supervise all functions of the Air Film Movers and drive them in all horizontal directions with millimeter precision.

Being slide-mounted the air bearings can be withdrawn for inspection and service without having to raise the Mover.

Safety equipment

The Air Film Movers keep the working environment at Tamini clean and safe. A steel bumper and movable brush guard prevent various objects from entering under the Mover and damaging the air bearings. Lights and audible signals are activated as soon as the Mover starts moving. Moreover, an emergency stop button is available on the radio transmitter for any emergencies.
